Defining life one word at a time

Wild Horses

I was tasked with writing a complete story about the world ending in 200 words. Here’s what I came up with:

EXT. DRY RIVERBED – DAY

A WHITE HORSE thunders towards a waterless riverbank, with no rider.

A BLACK HORSE follows behind stopping to eat a sparse patch of grass on the dry bank. It raises its front legs suddenly and falls backwards, hitting the ground with a THUNDEROUS CRASH, and scattering the contents of the saddlebags it was carrying.

The CAMERA ZOOMS IN on the bags.

The saddlebags sitting on a dusty wooden shelf.

INT. HOUSE IN THE WOODS – DAY

CUT TO:

AARON SHEPHERD pulls the saddlebags off the shelf in his living room.

He grabs items scattered on a table: food, knives, water and matches, and hurriedly shoves them in the bags while SANDRA SHEPHERD stands over him, with a pensive look on her face.

SANDRA
What is any of this going to do?

AARON
I’m not going to sit by and let them kill us. We still have so much to live for.

SANDRA
I don’t want to survive a nuclear holocaust. Or a world contaminated with hate.

AARON
Well, I do. Which means we will.

Aaron looks down at the bags as the CAMERA DRIFTS closer to them.
